Home Cleaning Tips & Tricks: How to Clean Hardwood Floors?

by Stephanie - November 20, 2019

There’s a good reason why hardwood floors are so popular. They are dependable, they can last for decades, and they have a certain natural beauty that gives a room a warm and cozy feel.

While most people simply swipe their hardwood floors during a standard house cleaning in Chamblee, the truth is that this isn’t the optimal way to clean hardwood floors

As with proper curtain washing and efficient countertop cleaning, there are small things you can do to maximize the benefits you get from your hardwood floor cleaning. We’ll tell you what these things are in the following article. Read on to learn more.

How do you keep hardwood floors dust free?

How do you keep hardwood floors dust free

Dust smells bad, looks disgusting, and carries harmful dust mites and bacteria that can cause all kinds of allergic reactions and health issues. Luckily, it isn’t very hard to remove.

Simply vacuuming the hardwood floor and then mopping it using a wood-cleaning product that’s safe and green will get rid of most of the dust. Water can damage wood floors, so DO NOT use a sopping wet mop or pour water on the floor. Make sure the microfiber mop is only damp before it touches the wood.

Dust also tends to build up under furniture, so remember to vacuum there as well or reach in with a damp microfiber cloth. If you have to move the furniture, apply felt pads or furniture coasters before you do so. The last thing you want is to scratch your beautiful hardwood floor by dragging the furniture over it.

Is it better to sweep or vacuum hardwood floors?

Sweeping tends to throw dust and dirt up into the air and cause it to slowly drift back down. This greatly diminishes the impact of cleaning and is also much more time- and energy-consuming than simply vacuuming the floor.

That’s not to say you can use any old vacuum head on a hardwood floor. Get a canister vacuum or a stick vac that’s designed for vacuuming hardwood floors. Make sure to use a vacuum head that isn’t worn down or too rough as this may scratch or chafe the wood.

What is the best way to keep hardwood floors clean?

Hardwood floors should be cleaned on a weekly or bi-weekly basis as part of a standard cleaning. This may seem excessive, but floors are used on a daily basis and therefore need to be cleaned more often than, for example, occasional glassware cleaning. Follow these steps when cleaning hardwood floors:

  • Step #1: Do the rest of the house first. By wiping, dusting, and vacuuming the furniture and the higher areas first, you’ll cause all of the excess dust and dirt to fall to the floor.
  • Step #2: Vacuum the floor using a vacuum (or at least a vacuum head) that’s designed for hard surface flooring. This will also remove the aforementioned excess dust and dirt. Don’t forget to vacuum under tables, desks, and other elevated pieces of furniture as well.
  • Step #3: Fill a bucket with a solution of warm water and your favorite wood cleaner. Wipe the floor with it using a damp microfiber cloth or dust mop.
